    Alnoor is a strategist. In the Nuba mountains where there has been no government services for over 60 years he brings people and resources together to build schools - and hope.

    Alnoor knows that Mende’s story is all too real and the education of girls is of paramount importance in the fight against slavery.  There is no shortage of skill and building material in Sudan. It’s just that people like Alnoor who can see the bigger picture need a helping hand. He has already galvanized support from Janan, a Canadian UN officer to build a girls school in Kortala. With your help and Mende’s Foundation he could build another.

    And he knows it won’t stop there; giving girls a high quality education where they are taught their human rights will be no mean feat. This is where you come in. Apart from your skills in fundraising for building and educational materials, when the time is right he will need teachers of all levels and subjects as well people with basic building and construction skills.  By sharing your skills we can end slavery in our lifetime and you can help fight for a world without human bondage, for a world where people are not bought and sold.    

  • Sudan  - The Facts

    Geography The Nuba people reside in the foothills of the Nuba Mountains in central Sudan. The Nuba Mountains mark the southern border of the desert and the northern limit of the fertile soils washed down by the Nile. They consist of over 50 tribes who share the common geography in Sudan’s Southern Kordofan Province. 

    Climate Tropical, Nothern region hot and dry. The southern region has much higher rainfall, the wet season lasting May to October 

    Population 45,047,502 

    Economy The economy of post-secession Sudan will experience contraction in growth in the years 2011 and 2012, Sudan lost 75% of its oil reserves after the southern part of the country became an independent nation July 2011.

    Government Independent since in 1953, Ruled by a series of unstable parliamentary governments and military regimes. Instituted fundamentalist Islamic law in 1983, which exacerbated the rift between the Arab north, and the black African Animists and Christians in the south resulting in a 20 year civil war. South Sudan became independent in July 2011.

    The IVJ7 is a postgraduate level programme that sees you tackling problems at a strategic level and is personalised for your continuous professional development. This could include attending conferences, trade shows or other international events.     Chipo is amongst the first generation of her village, one of the poorest in Zimbabwe, to have the opportunity to go to school. At the moment, Breakfast Primary School isn’t much to look at; a couple of old storage sheds left over from the hunting safari days.  There’s no running water and scant sanitation. However, to Chipo it represents an escape from the grinding poverty experienced by her parents and those who went before them.

    But things are changing; plans are underway to fund the development of the school through a pioneering Fairtrade wildlife sanctuary. Using and building on your skills in eco-tourism, conservation and administration, you’ll be helping to set up this enterprise to run for generations to come. In so doing you’ll be taking part in a homegrown Zimbabwean enterprise that can literally change the lives of young people like Chipo.

  • IVJ in Zimbabwe - Matabeleland

    Partner organisation - Hlekweni School for Social Entrepreneurs

    Sindisiwe works part time in a pre-school and studies Early Years Education at Hlekweni training centre in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe. She loves her work but lack of investment in schools means that there are very few text books or learning materials. Teachers have to make wall charts by hand or use expensive imports that children in Zimbabwe struggled to relate to.

    But Sindisiwe is a young woman with a bright idea. Last year, she attended the School for Social Entrepreneurs where she developed a business plan to make wall charts for pre-schools that are attractive, durable and affordable. She entered her business plan for the IVJ Social Enterprise Award and won first prize of $500USD. Even with this investment Sindiswe knows it won’t be easy but she is already using her skills and talents to give young children a better start in life.

    There are many young people who, given the opportunity, could turn a bright idea into a social enterprise and make a real difference to people’s lives. They don't want charity, they need positive role models and practical help and this is where you come in.     ECONOMY Tanzania is one of the world's poorest economies in terms of per capita income, however, Tanzania average 7% GDP growth per year between 2000 and 2008 on strong gold production and tourism. The economy depends heavily on agriculture, which accounts for more than 40% of GDP, provides 85% of exports, and employs about 80% of the work force.

    GOVERNMENT Shortly after achieving independence from Britain in the early 1960s, Tanganyika and Zanzibar merged to form the nation of Tanzania in 1964. One-party rule ended in 1995 with the first democratic elections held in the country since the 1970s. Zanzibar's semi-autonomous status and popular opposition have led to two contentious elections since 1995, which the ruling party won despite international observers' claims of voting irregularities. The formation of a government of national unity between Zanzibar's two leading parties succeeded in minimising electoral tension in 2010.

    Irving grows bananas on the Windward Islands. It isn’t the easiest life  but he loves it. He has problems though. Since the birth of the Fairtrade movement he’s found that producers in South America have been able to undercut the prices him and his co-producers need to charge to get a fair deal.

    Irving is a smart guy… he knows that the collaboration with his fellow producers is the key to the success of his sector and that Farm tourism has to be an option given the islands’ geography. The producers have pooled their Fairtrade premiums to buy a stunning 18 acre site overlooking the Atlantic.  In so doing they have laid the foundations for a more sustainable future for generations to come. Now he wants to access your skills in project management, marketing and business administration to enable him to represent himself on a global stage. When you put it like that, doesn't it sound less like a man in need of pity and more like a seriously resourceful entrepreneur looking for partners?.

  • St. Vincent - the facts

    GEOGRAPHY Wooded interior with precipitous topography impinging on seaboard.

    CLIMATE Tropical interior with coastal areas moderated by stiff Atlantic breezes.

    POPULATION 437,000

    ECONOMY In St. Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines and Dominica, banana production for export has dominated. It is estimated that banana production occupies 27% of all agricultural land in the Windward Islands. Of the total land used for agricultural purposes in St. Lucia in 2000, 45% was taken up by banana cultivation and 42% by coconut. Other production includes root vegetables and tree crops for domestic consumption and export markets. All islands rely heavily on tourism.

    GOVERNMENT The Windward Islands are comprised of the four independent States of Grenada, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, St. Lucia and Dominica. These countries occupy a total area of approximately 2,100 square kilometers.

    Population size is a constraint to efficiency of operations of administrative entities and to the availability of a wide enough skill pool to deal with implementation of World Trade Organisation (WTO) agreements, the Free Trade Area of the Americas (FTAA), the Caribbean Community (CARICOM).

  • Introduction

    Sadly, the inequalities and injustices set in motion hundreds of years ago have never gone away. They have merely changed in character over time with the ebb and flow of political and economic thought.

    In many places of the world, to pursue a dignified existence is to struggle in the face of almost unimaginable hardship and unfairness - we see it as our role to support such endeavour through on-the-ground initiatives designed to put developed world skills directly into the communities that need them. In so doing we also help people in more fortunate circumstances to discover something about their own dignity - creating opportunities for people to reconnect with their capacity for compassion, justice and altruism through sharing skills.

  • Ostensibly we exist to:

    • Tackle poverty and deprivation in Africa, Asia and the Caribbean by recruiting skilled professional volunteers who will assist in the provision of education, training and healthcare projects.
    • Advance the education of the public by raising awareness of international development issues in our countries of operation.
    • Develop the capacity and skills of members of disadvantaged groups in the UK in such a way that they are better able to participate more fully in society and maximise their contribution towards achieving international development goals.

    But...

    deep down we know that these are just routes to the same place. The guiding IVJ principle is this, that the liberty and humanity of everyone in the world is part of an indivisible whole - that none of us can be free whilst we are aware of the presence of injustice somewhere else.

    Things haven’t been so easy for Akili in recent years. The world is changing quickly; quicker than his traditional methods of tea farming can keep up with and he’s losing ground to growers in other parts of the world. Delivery of a crop in his particular area of Kenya has always been subject to fluctuations in climactic conditions and now average temperatures are rising he’s finding it harder and harder to feed his family.

    Using your knowledge of ecology, environment or agriculture you’ll be embedded within communities involved in the CafeDirect Producers Foundation Programme. You’ll be actively helping farmers to manage the devastating effects of climate change through the adoption of smarter working methods. A large part of your role will be to empower younger smallholders to take the lead in their communities, disseminating knowledge, experience and solutions. In this way, you’ll be leaving a lasting legacy of self-sufficiency in a future where the chances dictate that environmental degradation will be a constantly evolving challenge.

    GEOGRAPHY Low plains rise to central highlands bisected by Great Rift Valley; fertile plateau in west.

    ECONOMY Although the regional hub for trade and finance in East Africa, Kenya has been hampered by corruption and by reliance upon several primary goods whose prices have remained low.

    Post-election violence in early 2008, coupled with the effects of the global financial crisis on remittance and exports, reduced GDP growth to 1.7 in 2008, but the economy rebounded in 2009-10.

    GOVERNMENT KIBAKI's reelection in December 2007 brought charges of vote rigging from ODM candidate Raila ODINGA and unleashed two months of violence in which as many as 1,500 people died. UN-sponsored talks in late February produced a powersharing accord bringing ODINGA into the government in the restored position of prime minister. Kenya in August 2010 adopted a new constitution that eliminates the role of prime minister after the next presidential election.

    Partner organisation - The Y.O.U Project

    Reggis was destined for a life of crime. Born in Kingston's Seaview Gardens, he brought himself up in spite of his father's periodic absences and his mother's addiction to drugs. Continual brushes with the law culminated in a episode where a robbery he was involved with went wrong and a man ended up being stabbed - he barely survived. Reggis knew that unless he straightened out he'd end up in jail for the rest of his life or on a mortuary slab himself.

    He enrolled into the Y.O.U Programme, a voluntary organisation providing positive interventions for vulnerable adolescents, where IVJ volunteers helped him gradually built up his literacy and numeracy  from a standing start.  Over time he caught up with and surpassed his academic contemporaries, eventually landing a place at Kingston College. This year he'll be starting his first internship with a Kingston legal practice.

    Partner organisation - The Godigitall Project

    Janet was always one of the brightest in her class. Although her family were poor, it was lack of opportunity that really held Janet back. Her mother couldn't afford to pay for her college fees so Janet worked as a domestic saving every penny she could. But when little Sophie was born she had to put any plans for a career on hold. It was Sophie's first day at school when Janet vowed to give her daughter a better start in life than she had.

    Knowing that on-line courses might be the way forward and excited about the one laptop per chiild programme, Janet wanted to help her daughter learn and start a career herself. She enrolled at the Godigitall centre, a family learning centre with free access to the internet and skilled IVJ volunteers on hand to help.

    Gradually she built up her confidence, both with computers and in every day life. Within a year Janet had set up her own on-line business, linking with travel agents and selling tours of the village where she lives.

    By increasing access to ICT, 'working from home' is not just a bonus for professionals - but a lifesaver for single mums.     POPULATION 2,868,380 (July 2011 est.)

    ECONOMY The Jamaican economy is heavily dependent on services, which account for more than 60% of GDP. The country continues to derive most of its foreign exchange from tourism, remittances, and bauxite/alumina. The Golding administration faces the prospect of having to achieve fiscal discipline to maintain debt payments, while simultaneously attacking a serious crime problem that hampers economic growth. High unemployment exacerbates crime - including gang violence that is fuelled by the drug trade.

    GOVERNMENT In 1958 with other British Caribbean colonies it formed the Federation of the West Indies. Jamaica gained full independence when it withdrew from the Federation in 1962. Deteriorating economic conditions during the 1970s led to violence as rival gangs affiliated with the major political parties evolved into powerful organised crime networks involved in international drug smuggling and money laundering. Violent crime, drug trafficking, and poverty pose significant challenges to the government today. Nonetheless, many rural and resort areas remain relatively safe.

  • IVJ in The Gambia

    Partner organisation - Gambia Tourism Association

    Demba inherited her father’s boat when he died of AIDS five years ago. It wasn’t easy at first; there’s still a stigma attached to the families of AIDS victims in Gambia and across Africa in general. But little by little she began to make a living fishing the reefs between Tranje and Brufut. When a localised pollution spill 5 years ago meant that she’d have to sail 2 hours up the coast to reach more fertile waters she began chartering her boat and skipper abilities to tourists. Within a year she’d co-opted other fishermen to do the same under the banner of a single organisation and now runs one of the largest indigenous tourism businesses in Gambia.

    This is where you come in…Demba needs the know how of people with skills in sustainable tourism, marketing and business administration. She needs people who can help her business and those of other people like her to expand and to best reap the benefits of the tourism boom. She’s looking for a collaborator to help her realise her ideas rather than a saviour. In helping her you’ll be doing your bit to put control of Gambian Tourism back into the hands of the people who should be benefiting.

    GEOGRAPHY Flood plain of the Gambia River flanked by some low hills, almost an enclave of Senegal; smallest country on the continent of Africa.

    CLIMATE Tropical; hot, rainy season (Jun - Nov); cooler, dry season (Nov - May).

    POPULATION 1,797,860(July 2011 est.)

    ECONOMY The Gambia has sparse natural resource deposits and a limited agricultural base, and relies in part on remittances from workers overseas and tourist receipts. About three-quarters of the population depends on the agricultural sector for its livelihood. Unemployment and underemployment rates remain high; economic progress depends on sustained bilateral and multilateral aid and on continued technical assistance from multilateral and bilateral donors.

    GOVERNMENT Independent since 1965. With Senegal it formed a short-lived federation of Senegambia between 1982 and 1989. In 1991 the two nations signed a friendship treaty, but tensions have flared up intermittently since then. Yahya Jammeh led a military coup in 1994 that banned political activity. Presidential elections in 1996, followed by parliamentary balloting in 1997, completed a nominal return to civilian rule. Jammeh has been elected president in all elections up to and including 2006.

  • IVJ and Montserrat

    Maria was excited about starting a new life in Montserrat - things had been tough in her village in the Dominican Republic.

    Starting school in a new country, several grades behind pupils of her own age, was a real challenge. Having to learn English in order to understand the lessons made it harder still. Limited resources meant that Montserrat Schools were also struggling to to give the Spanish speaking pupils the quality of education they deserve. Maria knew she could get good grades - if she could take the exams in Spanish. But being in a remedial class because of the language difference soon began to take its toll on her self-confidence.

    Maria joined the language club run by IVJ volunteers, a team of young bi-ligual graduates, who skillfully turned the curriculum into fun, non-formal activities. Soon she was able to keep apace with her academic subjects by being taught in Spanish, and gradually learn English at the same time.

    There are lots of young girls like Maria, for whom migration can either mean a better life, or dropping out of the system. If you want to help young people like Maria and develop your teaching skills at the same time, register to volunteer now.

    GEOGRAPHY Approximately 40 square miles, comprising three mountain ranges, including Soufrière Hills which has the active soufrière volcano.

    CLIMATE Tropical; Tropical, hot, humid, average temperature 28°C

    POPULATION 5,164 ( 2012)

    ECONOMY The economy is really affected by the eruption. Most goods are imported. Both the port and airport were destroyed by the volcano so the island has suffered due to the lack of importing and exporting facilities. This has made the cost of living expensive and the economy slow. The agriculture sector is also affected by the reduction of the land available for farming and the fact that they had to release their cattle when the eruption happened. The Island is redeveloping the tourist industry as this was and still is the main source of income

    GOVERNMENT   Montserrat is a UK overseas territory. The current Premier of the island is Donaldson Romeo of the People's Democratic Movement.

    Inspirational Volunteer Journey people come from all walks of life but one thing that unites them is a dissatisfaction with the notion that some people are born into suffering and there is little point worrying about that fact.     IVJ people see injustice and feel compelled to do something about it. They are aware that in so doing they are committing to a course of action that will benefit not only the people they are directly working with  but also themselves.     Most IVJ people come to us with defined skills and knowledge that they have acquired and honed in the developed world, they sense that there is a situation ‘out there’ where those skills could be applied to give them a greater meaning.  That’s where IVJ comes in; we’ve worked with doctors, teachers, businessmen and grad students to help them resolve that disconnect.     You'll do 2 days pre-departure training where you'll meet and get to know the other volunteers you could be working with. But for the most part, by living and learning with the local community you will develop and share your skills to build sustainable livelihoods and foster personal growth.

    With IVJ you will work with people who are leaders in communities facing the most challenging of circumstances. This makes for a deep and insiprational introduction to leadership theory and understanding how to lead and motivate others. In whichever country the assignment takes place, participants will have intense experiences with real consequences and powerful, positive and memorable outcomes.

    You'll liaise directly with the project overseas to plan your placement and join an action learning set with other local leaders and professionals. This provides the context for maximising the contribution you will make to the project and to your own personal development.

    You'll probably already hold a managerial position in your day job. Working with IVJ you will have a good overview of the strategic objectives of the volunteer programmes, how the work that you will do makes a difference to the lives of ordinary people and how you will develop your leadership potential and use your experience back in the workplace

    ASSESSMENT Keep a reflective log of your learning journey so that you know how far you have travelled, the difference you have made to the lives  of others and for assessment for the ILM Level 5 Award in Leadership

    Pre-departure work will involve liasing directly with the project to design your assignment to contribute towards their strategic goals. As well as working alongside the projects senior staff you may find yourself supporting the work of IVJ at international development and trade and investment forums.

    Although this might be your first experience of volunteering overseas, you probably have extensive strategic management experience and you're looking to build a portfolio of international experience. Your assignments will be mix of hands-on work with local projects and building strategic relationships with our partners.  You'll gain an understanding of the wider context in which IVJ operates and potentially develop new projects for IVJ.

    ASSESSMENT Demonstrate your awareness of the wider strategic context through a critcal incident review, the impact on peoples lives and how your skills have made a difference.

    IVJ works with champions of change in developing nations and we know that they are perfectly able to tell their own story. This is why IVJ in the UK is diaspora led. Our overseas partners are local charitable trusts whose constitutions ensure that the interests of the most disavantaged are represented, especially women and girls.

    Our personal service

    With IVJ you can travel, make a lasting difference where it’s needed and come back with practical skills and a recognised leadership qualification.  Our training team are routinely in contact with the projects overseas and will give you up to date information about what you can expect on your volunteer assignment.

    Many of our volunteers will be looking for a placement that will expose them to greater challenges and give them learning that they can use to develop their careers. We think that’s great and we positively encourage this, especially for diaspora volunteers. Our training team will help you clarify your personal goals and organise a volunteering assignment which will help you to achieve them.

  • Getting ready for your journey

    Your placement will be scheduled to enable you to receive at least 30 hours of guided learning before you depart. As well as developing leadership, teamwork and communication skills the training covers local history, geography and social norms, background to the project, in-country arrangements and safety and security. This is also a great opportunity to meet other volunteers and often returned volunteers will be there to give you first hand insight into what it will be like on your assignment.

    Your inspirational journey

    Your volunteer journey can be anything between 4-12 weeks. As the placements may be short term we want to make sure that both you and the project get the most out of your placement. We work with both parties to clarify the elements of a 3 way agreement between you, the project and IVJ. Action learning sets during the volunteer placement create the opportunity to share knowledge and skills with other local leaders and volunteers.

    Your personal journey will be unique but our approach to all assignments is consistent; we ask you to 'teach a man to fish'. Our capacity building philosophy means that as far as possible we want you leave your skills behind. Typically, you woulld 'buddy-up' with another local volunteer or worker in the organisation to ensure lasting impact of the volunteer placement.

  • On assignment

    Whilst in country you will work under the guidance of a project manager who will make your stay as fulfilling as possible and ensure that you meet your placement objectives. Remember, you will be supporting the project to achieve specific outcomes which without you they might otherwise not achieve. It may be a long time before someone with your skills is available to them again. It’s vitally important that they get the most out of you whilst you are there and that you get the most out of your experience with them. This is why the placement agreement is so important.

    Coming home

    Volunteering can be a life changing experience. You will have experienced a personal journey like no other and we hope you are inspired to continue to support IVJ and the projects we develop. Many of our volunteers will return to their projects and in between time will maintain mentoring relationships on line. Many will be inspired to raise funds and to send vital equipment.   • Thembani was lucky.

    His father made enough money to send him to Hlekweni Training Centre in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe.

    This allowed him to go to university and obtain his engineering degree. He could have moved to Europe, signing up for the ‘good life’ but he chose to stay in the country he loves and use his education to help make a difference in the face of widespread unemployment and political instability.

    With his father, he’s set up a dairy farm and distribution business that supplies high quality milk to people with no livestock of their own across the Bulawayo District. The byproducts of his business, he uses to create biogas via a process he has designed himself, meaning that the production side of his business is carbon-neutral.

    Thembani is the first person to admit that he’s just an ordinary guy. What makes him different is that he was given a chance in a country where a lucky break can mean the difference between life and death. There are many children not so lucky but who, given the opportunity, could shine as brightly as Thembani. By signing up for IVJ you could help them achieve their potential, giving them the opportunity to one day give something back to their communities.

  • Irving is a smart guy.

    He grows bananas on the Windward Islands. It isn't the easiest life but he loves it. 

    He has problems though. Since the birth of the Fairtrade movement he’s found that producers in South America have been able to undercut the prices him and his co-producers need to charge to get a fair deal.

    Being smart…he knows that collaboration with his fellow producers is the key to the success of his sector and that Farm tourism has to be an option given the islands’ geography. The producers have pooled their Fairtrade premiums to buy a stunning 18 acre site overlooking the Atlantic. In so doing, they have laid the foundations for a more sustainable future for generations to come. Now he wants to access your skills in project management, marketing and business administration to enable him to launch this project on a global stage.

    When you put it like that, doesn't it sound less like a man in need of pity and more like a seriously resourceful entrepreneur looking for partners?

  • Trouble brewing for Akili.

    Things haven't been so easy for Akili in recent years. The world is changing quickly...

    Quicker than his traditional methods of tea farming can keep up with and he’s losing ground to growers in other parts of the world. Delivery of a crop in his particular area of Kenya has always been subject to fluctuations in climactic conditions and now average temperatures are rising he’s finding it harder and harder to feed his family.

    Using your knowledge of ecology, environment or agriculture you’ll be embedded within communities involved in the CafeDirect Producers Foundation Programme. You’ll be actively helping farmers to manage the devastating effects of climate change through the adoption of smarter working methods.

    A large part of your role will be to empower younger smallholders to take the lead in their communities, disseminating knowledge, experience and solutions. In this way, you’ll be leaving a lasting legacy of self-sufficiency in a future where the chances dictate that environmental degradation will be a constantly evolving challenge.

  • Chipo is excited.

    She is amongst the first generation of her village, one of the poorest in Zimbabwe, to have the opportunity to go to school.

    At the moment, Breakfast Primary School isn’t much to look at; a couple of old storage sheds left over from the hunting safari days. There’s no running water and scant sanitation. However, to Chipo it represents an escape from the grinding poverty experienced by her parents and those who went before them.

    But things are changing; plans are underway to fund the development of the school through a pioneering Fairtrade wildlife sanctuary. Using and building on your skills in eco-tourism, conservation and administration, you’ll be helping to set up this enterprise to run for generations to come.

    In so doing you’ll be taking part in a homegrown Zimbabwean enterprise that can literally change the lives of young people like Chipo.

  • Vijaya's a plucky kid.

    She can feed her younger siblings for an entire year with a length of wire and a coconut - she has done since she was 7.

    She busks outside shops and bus stations for anything up to 12 hours a day using her ektara; a home-made single-stringed instrument, to earn enough for her family's food. She isn't unhappy, she isn't pleading for help but she could have a real future if somebody gave her the tools to develop.

    There are literally thousands of street children like Vijaya in Bangladesh. Using and building on your skills in healthcare or education you’ll be able to help give them a fighting chance.  These are intelligent, resourceful and determined children whom fate has conspired against - you can make a real difference to their lives.

    You have much to learn from each other -  you may not be able to feed your family for a year with a single coconut but you can nourish yourself and them for life with Inspirational Volunteer Journeys.

  • Ghufira's in the house.

    Before she found the House of Talent in Dar es Salaam, Ghufira thought that her singing was just something she did to keep her siblings happy whilst her mother was at work.

    The thought that she might one day be able to support them financially through her talent was no more than a dream she felt slightly guilty about harbouring. Now she’s part of a band that’s been touring for the last six months, making each of its members a solid living, allowing them the freedom to express themselves and spreading enjoyment to the crowds they play to.

    Ghufira is just one of many Africans looking for a way to make the most of their performing talents.
